6 pm to 6:05 pm – MEETING OPENING, Welcome by President and HOUSEKEEPING
6.05 pm to 6.35 pm - Robert Brain – Private Trader, Educator and Nimble Short-Term Investor (in-person)
Topic: “Hands-on chart reading interpretation – real demonstration with interactive audience participation”
How can we effectively use share price charts to analyse whether a stock should be bought or not? How can we interpret the likely future price action? and the various chart indicators that are available?
Don’t forget that the price charts summarise the opinions and emotions of the real market participants, and every price chart has a story to tell.
In this session Robert will show a price chart for a security (a stock, or ETF or whatever) and invite interactive audience input from in-the-room meeting participants and the remote webinar participants. The real question will be: “Is this stock a buy?”
If we have time, our discussion might include the different aspects of stock selection:
- Uptrenders? – Most ATAA members are trend traders, so we probably want uptrending* stocks (but we need some tips on how to find them).
- Stock universe – Which stocks are best to look at? Should we focus on specific sectors? Does it matter whether we look at large cap, medium cap or small cap stocks?
- Priority – Should we firstly look for a confirmed uptrend, or a chart pattern, or what?
- Indicator – What is the best chart indicator to use? (with suggestions from the audience for their favourite indicator).
- Entry criteria – What “set up” or “trigger” conditions might we look at for an entry?
* — We will probably focus on short- to medium-term trend trading strategy ideas, rather than a breakout strategy, or pattern strategy, etc. This time frame is perfect for the busy investors/traders who only have a couple of hours each week to do their analysis and stock selection
About Robert Brain
Robert has been studying the many aspects of technical analysis since 2006, and he is convinced that the share market price charts summarise the underlying opinions and emotions of the real market participants, and that every price chart tells a story. He also believes that Price Action Context is very relevant, and that Nimble Short-Term Investing is the way to go.
A few years ago, Robert decided to combine his then casual interest in the share market with his extensive experience as an educator to develop his web-based Share Market Toolbox business to help investors and traders to refine their own strategies and learn about the strategies of others. Robert is a private trader and educator, and an ATAA Councillor in the Melbourne Chapter. He also runs the Australian BullCharts (charting software) User Group with monthly Melbourne meetings and online webinar sessions.
