‘MACD-V: Volatility Normalised MACD’ – Alex Spiraglou
This presentation is based on a research paper that won the CMT Association Charles Dow Award in 2022, walks through the development of this indicator that undermines the use of the MACD in systematic strategy building.
The MACD – arguably the most widely used momentum indicator after RSI – carries a structural flaw that makes it unreliable across different markets and across time.
The solution – normalising the MACD by volatility rather than by price – creates a momentum indicator that is genuinely comparable across markets, across time, and across securities.
In this video, Alex describes:
- Why standard momentum indicators fail
- Why normalising by price doesn’t work
- The Seven-Range Momentum Lifecycle Model
- Using MACD-V as a Regime Filter (and not a signal generator)
- Divergences and Pattern Recognition (that can be coded)
- A multi-timeframe Framework for trading
The format of the presentation is a Video Podcast and has direct relevance for discretionary rule-based traders, mechanical traders and systematic traders using code of this indicator.
