6.30pm – 7.30pm: Presentation - Experiencing the Markets: Why Knowing Technical Analysis Is Not the Same as Knowing How to Trade – Darryl Nagel
Why can a trader understand indicators, charts, and technical analysis yet still struggle to trade successfully? Drawing on interviews with 25 experienced self-directed retail traders, this presentation explores what traders learn from firsthand market experience that is difficult to gain from a book or course. Participants describe how exposure to gains, losses, and uncertainty can gradually reshape how traders think, manage risk, and respond emotionally. The presentation considers the shift from seeking certainty to thinking in probabilities, and the development of trading plans, position sizing, risk controls, reflection, and other forms of structure. Its central proposition is that experience alone does not necessarily create expertise: reflection and adaptation seem critical to turning market experience into learning. Ultimately, experience does not remove market uncertainty; it may change the trader's relationship to it.
